PROJECT REVEAL, PART I: Woodscove, Laguna Beach

Our Woodscove project is a special one. Nestled into the quiet streets of Laguna Beach, just minutes up from the shore, this home offers our clients the perfect space to spend time outdoors together - in all seasons, entertain guests, and enjoy a house designed specially to serve their needs as a family of four.

We worked closely with our clients throughout the processes of design and construction, ensuring each decision felt in line with their vision. They welcomed our challenges to make bolder decisions when it came to color selections, mixing patterns, and building custom furniture pieces that would enhance their space. Ultimately, we wanted to design a home that felt sophisticated, cozy, something new and unique for our clients and the surrounding neighborhood… while still embracing the essence of coastal living. Three reasons we’re big proponents of using plaster (yes, on the ceiling too!):

1. 🤎 We are all about creating warm, layered spaces. Plaster allows us to add a textural, visually-stimulating layer to a room while still remaining a neutral backdrop to let other pieces, fabrics, materials pop as the focal points.

2. ⏳It’s timeless. Yes, it’s a popular application at the moment because more and more people are learning about the benefits of using plaster as a wall finish, but we don’t believe it’s a “trend,” per-say. Plaster has been used for centuries as a wall finish for both decorative and purely functional reasons, and we believe it will always have a place in the industry of construction and design. It holds a historical, timeless appeal, but can be modernized through various application styles, color use, or by using it in unexpected ways.

3. 🍃 It’s a sustainable and non-toxic product. Used throughout history, plaster ingredients were derived from the earth (primarily crushed lime or gypsum, sand and water), and has no toxic off-gassing. We deem this highly important as a material used in the home.

CUSTOM FURNITURE: A look behind the scenes!

Designing custom pieces for our clients is one of our specialties at Studio Gutow. We are in the business of curating a home to meet the unique needs of our clients, and we find that time after time this leads us to designing something that matches the criteria better than we can find in the market.

Additionally, we feel so inspired by the high level of craftsmanship that is found in the antique and vintage pieces we collect, so we have worked hard to find skilled vendors that can uphold that same quality, but in new pieces. It allows us to bring our biggest inspiration to life in new forms!

Our process to make custom furniture is a detailed one, with many rounds of technical drawings to get each detail accounted for, meetings with our maker to ensure we are aligned, templates made for shape and scale, progress check-ins and sit tests, and so many more unpredictable details to account for along the way. It is not for the faint of heart, but SO rewarding to see the end result come to life for our clients.
